Job Description
Astex Pharmaceuticals is seeking a talented Assay Biologist to join its drug discovery bioscience group, contributing to projects from target evaluation through to candidate selection.
Working within multidisciplinary teams alongside structural biologists, biophysicists, chemists, bioinformaticians, and biologists, the successful candidate will apply expertise in enzyme and protein mechanisms to optimise fragment hits into lead compounds.
The role will involve developing and running primary assays to support compound testing against relevant drug targets. Previous experience with biochemical assays and screening formats is essential.
Skills & Experience Required
Essential Qualifications & Experience
PhD in a relevant biological/biochemical science
Experience establishing robust biochemical, cell-free assays in either industry or academia
Knowledge of biochemical assays and screening formats
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
Experience with enzyme kinetics, assay development, and troubleshooting
Strong analytical skills
Knowledge of chemistry and/or biophysics
Molecular biology expertise, including cloning and cell editing techniques
Experience working with target classes such as kinases, membrane proteins, and protein-protein interactions
Previous experience working within matrix teams in pharma or biotech environments
Principal Responsibilities
Design, develop, and execute de novo assays for a range of protein systems
Support drug discovery projects involving novel enzymes and protein-protein interactions
Provide mechanistic insight on targets and compounds
Collaborate with chemistry and biophysics teams to interpret SAR data
Explore and implement innovative assay technologies
Provide training and guidance to junior team members where appropriate
